Tax Time! One more time for the Silicon Valley carryover loss!

It’s March 2009!  Amazing how time flies!  So who had jumped in on the taxes for this year?  OMG I have an M.B.A and numbers are my friends, but I would NEVER do my own taxes. NEVER!  When can Washington DC make it easy –or even EASIER for us to file taxes?  So I gathered all my papers and called HR Block –amazing – “totally booked all day Saturday & Sunday!” OMG  Next stop:  WalMart.  My husband asked the young man if he had any openings for the day - -good news: come at 10am!  So we brought all our papers with all our gift-that-keeps-on-giving carryovers to him at the desk table at the front of WalMart.  If any of you ‘enjoy’ carryovers, like mine from the ‘dot-con’ days of ‘loss,’ you understand why I call them the gift that keeps on giving – OMG! So we completed our taxes.  Now all we have to do is wait for the reviewers to complete the cross-check end-to-end.  “Maybe Monday” and of course the young gentleman “only works weekends.”  So we successfully had a “professional” work the many forms for us BUT we still wait while the subject matter experts plow through the weekend work it seems.  Everyone, pace yourself and I’ll do the same.  Adios

Difficult weather in sunny - NOT! - California!

Happy Monday to all!  The weather is California is tough!  Closed freeways!  Even 50 miles of I-5 north of LA were shut down  - wow!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29220403

That stretch of highway in the hills north of LA seems to attract poor highway conditions.  I struggled to keep up with the U-Haul just 30 feet ahead of me less than a year ago.  I remember the zero visibility due to the dry fields on each side I5.  The dry dirt created a dirt storm resulting in zero visibility.  I gripped the steering wheel LOL but it was a recipe for disaster.  None thankfully when I drove through there but the conditions were right as they were for the sleet and snow yesterday.  And more rain to come – storm clouds extend out into the ocean for hundreds of miles. No relief any time soon.   I totally loved living in Silicon Valley before the ‘dot-con’ I worked for slipped rapidly to stock watch then de-listing as so many other software stocks did.   California is so beautiful with flowers everywhere, but the weather can be unforgiving.  I remember thinking how odd it was after living in Manhattan to be in SIlicon Valley and to look to the Pacific Ocean for my weather ahead!  LOL Yes, I want my ashes spread in Carmel for sure!  It was totally a vacation to walk along the sand in Carmel with hubby and dawg.  I can hear the surf now!  LOL  It made the 70+ hour work week bearable for sure!  At least until the incompetent Controller would call me on my always-ON cell phone with yet another irrelevant question just to see if I’d answer the phone when she called on a Sunday afternoon.  OMG  The smart money is that she and the other senior leadership of the dot-con stole enough with performance bonuses to be comfy for life.  Bet she’s messing up someone else’s life these days!  But not mine!  LOL  Everyone, pace yourself and I will do same.  Adios

Silicon Valley ‘thank you’

Sharing good news:  In an unexpected company email just now, a director told me ‘thank you’ plus an add-on “awesome team player” – what a mind wipe!  Talk about doing a ‘re-set’ on your day’s lookahead!  Having said that, I do look back a few years to a totally opposite experience and also memorable:  I was new to California life in a Silicon Valley IT shop and was impressed by the initiative of one of the members on my new team, so I said “Well done and thank you.”  Result: blowback:  the young namby-pamby featherweight VP came directly to my desk after overhearing this praise: “Don’t you EVER say those words ‘thank you’ to anyone in this building ever!!!  They are just doing their jobs!  Don’t you get it?!!  They will expect praise because of YOU!  Your’re not working in Manhattan any more – get with the program! – no more praise. PERIOD!!!”  Yep – it stung & it stayed with me.  What goes around comes around smile: the economy took away his perk of his townhouse on Haight street that he bragged about to us worker bees.  LOL  So use the words “thank you’ and cherish being told ‘thank you’ especially unsolicited!  Pull out those emails on a blue day & smile….and ‘re-set’!  Get healthy!  Stay healthy!  pace yourself and I will do same.  Adios.
